Google's Facebook Killer

While it hasn’t been officially announced, there are rumors that Google has started development of a Facebook alternative, which has been dubbed “GoogleMe.” While there are no official releases, I called up some of my friends in the know at Google, who confirmed with me that there have been talks and plans for a while how to compete with Facebook and now they have an official project that will destroy Facebook… or at least take a few users away from Facebook. I did a little thinking over the last day or so about this, and decided that when Google launches this, that this actually has a definite ability to be a Facebook “killer” for a variety of reasons. Read on.

One-Third of All US on Facebook, Yet Users are Worthless?

First of all, I don’t hate Facebook anymore than I dislike any internet fad. One of my 30,000 readers asked me why I always write negative things about Facebook. First of all this isn’t quite true, since I’ve written a few articles about how to make money on Facebook and the top ads on Facebook. I just like to question what is going on, look beyond the headlines and the spin. So, in that light, I want to examine the numbers: According to Comscore, in June, over 130 Million people within the US used Facebook. This is about one third of the population of the US that uses Facebook – some of them day after day, many times a day, making it one of the most popular media sources ever in the history of the world. However, despite this, Facebook may only make $1 Billion this next year, even with expected growth. This may seem like a lot money, but it’s actually not – and I know why.

Facebook losing key demographic of 18-35 year-olds.

For some reason this wasn’t covered all that much in the media or in the industry – but its something significant and more importantly something to really think about. Facebook, the king of all social media, is starting to show a serious crack in its armor. According to InsideFacebook, in a graph released, there is a disturbing trend of facebook starting to have a negative growth in the key demographic of 18-35 year-olds. This is something very interesting, and more importantly should disturb Facebook executives enormously.

Why is Facebook at War with Affiliate Marketers?

For the last few years, everyone who is anyone has been saying the same thing about Facebook: “It’s a gold mine for affiliate marketers.” With self-serve targeting features that are starting to rival Google, it’s the new gem of affiliate marketing… at least until 2010. For some reason the powers that be at Facebook have slowly started to determine that affiliate marketers are no longer “wanted” in mass there, and have started to make rules that affect them significantly. As one employee of Facebook told me confidentially, “affiliate marketers and their techniques just don’t fit into our long term growth plan.” In fact, after conversations with friends and owners of other affiliate networks, many of them have shared the same story: their ads being taken down in mass, their accounts canceled and more and more rules that restrict the ability of affiliate marketers to use facebook

Myspace Officially dead to Advertisers

Myspace, once heralded as the site for anyone and everyone who was cool and hip, then the place that everyone had to go to make friends, is officially dead to advertisers in my opinion. Once the gem of the Fox Interactive Empire, it has became a symbol of the easy rise and fall of any internet website, but more importantly how any audience is fickle and easily turned off. Myspace just a few years ago was touting its value to advertisers as a must by to reach key audience, now sees itself as nothing more than a pariah in the interactive advertising industry

Facebook Bigger than Google Comments

After I posted on Wednesday my analysis of Hitwise’s fake claim that Facebook had overtaken Google, I received enormous amounts of hits and attention. The next thing that happened is that all the media people who read my blog, (and there are a few still) started writing articles saying the same exact thing. I’m constantly amazed how “mainstream” media can’t think for themselves and constantly copy what people say. Some newspaper reporters at least thank me for the information, an occasionally actually quote me. Still, there were a few sources that even a day later, bought the story without looking at the source. I’m thinking tomorrow I’ll do a press release claiming that I found out that 90% of the people on Facebook are actually living with their parents, and see how many people actually follow that story and how many press outlets just believe it, ‘cause I said it.
